Munro Galloway

California House

Esther McCoy once observed that “California changes everyone." I sense this vividly in my recent work. I started drawing from life three years ago, after moving to Southern California. The drawings are based on everyday life: a table, a window, a bookshelf, a room, a family, a house. As McCoy writes in “The California House...How It Started,” “the builders, intuitive rather than trained, had a knowledge of climate control, indoor-outdoor relationships, and site planning, which came to them firsthand.” My drawings evolve intuitively, spaces and objects transform and shift location. Interiors become exteriors, figures emerge and disappear. The transformation can also be physical, when a fragment of one drawing is collaged into another. The drawings are a prompt for beginning a painting. In the paintings I'm trying to create lived spaces. Not a representation of life, but life as we experience it—through our sense of space, movement, and touch. I want the colors in the paintings to exude a specific temperature or to evoke a time of day, and for the architecture and scale to produce a feeling of proximity or distance. Here in the Tack Room the drawings and paintings occupy a California House, an indoor-outdoor space, which has been adapted to its site by Kari and Michael.
